By: C. Kent, aka (Superman) 5/15/13 There is a saying, “What a difference a day makes”, but today it is more like what a difference two days make. Monday was a scorcher but when I got up today it was almost cool. It was supposed to reach close to 80 so I didn’t want to go with arm and leg warmers and I had a ride planned over the climb on Goetz and that always warms me up so I headed to Burger King to see who would be joining me on today’s ride. Like many mornings Digger was waiting as I pulled up and we had coffee together till Dura Max arrived. Next to pull in was Surgeon followed by Coyote and MacGyver. We knew we would be meeting T-3 on Gilmore so at 8:30 we headed for Acacia and over to Kirby. The group was smaller than it has been but all of the riders today seemed content to stay together as a group. I think we must have sounded like a group of long lost relatives as we chatted our way to Cypress and turned west through the housing tract and towards Johnston. Like most days we caught the light on Sanderson red. As soon as it turned green we headed south towards Stetson. We managed to make the light at Stetson and quickly past Wally World toward Domenigoni. As we turned west Surgeon took the lead and pulled us most of the way to Warren and then MacGyver took over and started a long pull all the way to Winchester and then headed for the Saddle. I was more than happy to accept a pull to the top of the Saddle for a regroup. Once we had rested and hydrated we dropped off the back side of the Saddle and headed towards Lindenburger. Like most days I got the light red after making a quick decent off the hill. As we restarted I managed to stay out front till we got to Laguna Vista when Surgeon pulled out front and stayed there as we past Menifee Lakes. All we had to do at that point was get past Antelope and over the freeway before continuing past Haun and towards Carl’s for a nature break before moving down Newport towards Goetz. I managed to get back in front at Bradley and pulled us to Carl’s for another regroup. Surgeon was still nursing a sore knee so he decided not to make the climb and turned on Murrieta while we crossed the street and stayed on Newport. As we rounded the corner onto Goetz I told MacGyver that we would regroup at the top and fell back to follow T-3 and Dura Max till we were on the hill proper. MacGyver more or less rode away and I dropped into the small ring and started a spin that took me past T-3 and Dura Max but with Digger in tow. He fell off my wheel by the little 7/11 and I followed MacGyver from about 200 yards back. I felt pretty good today and was still spinning as I made it to the top of Goetz and Joined MacGyver in waiting for Digger, T-3, Dura Max shepherded by Coyote. Once we were all back together we dropped off the back side of Goetz and headed for Ethanic. I made sure everyone understood to take it easy till we were past the bumpy spots on the upper side on Goetz and as soon as we past them I let the bike god and literally coasted down the hill at 31 mph. By the time I was down to the houses on Goetz I noticed Surgeon was waiting for us. He fell in with the group descending the hill and they all followed me to Ethanic and we headed east for the first time today. It didn’t take us all that long to get from Goetz to Murrieta before making the turn South towards McCall. MacGyver took the lead and gave us a strong pull for at least three blocks before I managed to pull up next to him to let him know we would be making a left past the cemetery and heading east again. As we pointed our bikes at the freeway was past the little animal park on the left with the Llamas and Emus running around. We rolled past the stop sign and came out onto the surface street next to the freeway that turns onto Bradley. Surgeon took off as the light changed at McCall and crested the freeway before the rest of us. MacGyver told me he would be able to stop at the top of the hill because he had to get home and so he took off after Surgeon to head up the hill. Coyote left us at antelope so it was just Surgeon, Digger, Dura Max, T-3 and Me at the top of the hill for a regroup. We dropped down the back side of McCall and across Menifee to Heritage before heading to Simpson and east once more. I was leading at Briggs till Surgeon took off to chase to Helmetless guys on road bike that insisted on riding on the wrong side of the road. He waited for us at Leon and stayed with us as we headed for Winchester. Surgeon had to leave for an appointment so that cut us down to just four for a stop at Chris’s. We had something to drink and I polished off a Odwalla bar before we decided it was time to get back on the road and head for home. Because we all rode our bikes to Burger King this morning there was no real reason to return there so we headed up Winchester planning on taking Stowe, California and Stetson home. I took us to Stowe and began the run at California and then down to Stetson. Once we were headed east on Stetson we just closed into a group and talked all the way to Warren. Maybe because people enjoyed the Race Monday, or maybe not, but people were being very friendly and waved us through the stop sign at Warren. Digger stayed with us as we past the airport road and we all made it to Sanderson and then Johnston before headed east again. We dropped T-3 off at her gate and left Digger at Palm before I left Dura Max and headed for home myself. It turned into a 43 mile enjoyable ride on a great day and a great climb.
