By the time I looked outside today it was clear with blue skies and just the beginning of a warm day. I had no worries about arm and leg warmers and it didn’t look like we were going to get much wind. So once I had breakfast, a blueberry banana smoothie, got dressed and headed out the door for Burger King. I got there just in time to have coffee with Digger and Dura Max. Highlander, Surgeon, Bloodhound, Bulldozer, Gambler and D’Artagnon pulled up one after another. MacGyver and T-3 joined us as well. It was all I could do to hold the group back and three of them left before the rest of us heading south to Acacia.
Highlander waited for us as we caught the light on Florida while Dura Max and T-3 rolled onto Acacia and over to Kirby. We did pull up to them at a rather long light on Kirby before heading south again. It seemed as if everyone was a bit eager today because we were running a bit hotter than we normally do right after we started towards the railroad track. I wasn’t the first to turn the corner onto Cypress but we cruised through it easily.
Everyone was moving so smoothly that I got a chance to ride in the middle of the pack and to be honest it was refreshing. We went north to Wentworth and then west past the airport and out onto Stetson. It was even nicer letting three others pull me to Warrens. In fact I could see no reason to move from my protected spot all the way to California even after Bloodhound and Bulldozer started to make a run at Stowe for the run west.
With the exception of the two fleeing A riders we more or less stayed together as a group with Surgeon pulling about half way down Stowe. About then MacGyver pulled up front and took over the pull and I was more than happy to let him take us the rest of the way to Winchester and the country market regroup. It was turning into a gorgeous day and everyone got to the parking lot pretty much at the same time. We removed any excess clothes and downed some hydration before I took us out onto Winchester and headed for the Dump road and west again.
The group was rolling along pretty well when we started to split into an A and B group and I noticed three riders pretty far behind us. I had the Bs pull over for a regroup on Briggs and to my surprise we had picked up Coyote who decided to ride sweep and give me a break. Once we were all together we headed north on Briggs, crossed Florida and turned onto Mapes.
I waited for everyone to regroup at Menifee and started us north. I pulled till we got to the top of the rise and then turned the lead over to Surgeon, Highlander and MacGyver. Highlander pulled us past the nursery and slowly got us up to speed before I told MacGyver to jump on my back wheel so we could make a run all the way to Nuevo. I jumped and took MacGyver with me and we made it almost to the stop sign where MacGyver took a pull that took us to Central where I took over again and got us to the regroup point at the corner of Nuevo.
Surgeon headed back to his house and we headed west where we came up to the A group waiting for us. Dura Max and T-3 past us while we were talking and we took off on a chase to Evans and north.
We got all the way up to Ramona without catching the two escapees and made our turn east. We could see them up by the entrance road to the lake and somewhere just east of that road we caught them. That was like letting the dogs out because the entire A group took off on a break heading for the hill. Coyote started to bridge the gap and made it halfway there before looking back and taking pity on me and waited till I got the rest of the Bs up the hill with me. We then made a rather fast run down to Lakeview and regrouped at the Valero. Once on our way again I started us south till giving the lead to Bloodhound. Soon Digger fell off of our little break and I joined Highlander and Bloodhound on the run back to Nuevo.
We made the jog heading over to Central and I noticed Gambler and Coyote gaining rather quickly so I broke off and sat up planning on slowing up their charge just a bit so Bloodhound could get a gap built up on Central. The plan only partially worked because while Coyote backed off Bulldozer and D’Artagnon joined the chase group and rounded together as we headed south on Menifee. MacGyver started out up front but once Bulldozer saw the gap Bloodhound and Highlander had the chase was on. I slowed down to see where Digger, Dura Max and T-3 were but there were nowhere to be seen. It took me all the way to Florida to catch MacGyver and I couldn’t even see the A group peloton.
MacGyver and I started working together and were almost all the way to McCall before we realized the Peloton had stopped at the AM/PM. They caught us as we rolled through McCall and hauled us to Simpson before we headed back towards Lindenburger. I knew we would lose Coyote at Lindenburger but I could also tell the Bandini was about to hit the air conditioner when Bulldozer, Gambler and D’Artagnon saw Bloodhound and Highlander short of the stop sign at Briggs. They caught them before Winchester and then they waited to say goodbye when MacGyver and I got there.
We had coffee and visited for a while at Chris’s till Digger arrived, with a flat tire. Once refreshed we all headed back to Domenigoni and started back towards Sanderson. We held a steady pace all the way back to the dry wash and then to Warren. We turned north on Sanderson and Bloodhound and I left Highlander and Digger at Johnston. We rode together till I got to my street and went home myself, with 54 good miles on my computer.
