By: C. Kent, aka (Superman)
The weather report for Friday was good and I had a half century planned. My hope was that a good group would show up and we would have a great ride. More or less most of my wishes came true.
I got to Burger King to see Digger waiting. We talked for a while till Highlander arrived. Surgeon and Minotaur joined us and to some surprise so did a clean shaven Pirate. A new rider named Forest joined us at Gambler and Bulldozer’s invitation just before they pulled up as well. Huntress was early but just a bit before Quicksilver. Barracuda rode up about the same time as MacGyver. Just as we were all ready to leave Newsboy rode in and we headed for Gilmore and south.
We made it to Acacia and then the Kirby only to catch the light red. We took a few minutes before we could continue on south towards the railroad tracks.
It didn’t take us long to make it to Cypress and head west through the housing tract towards Johnston. I had managed to lead the whole group up to Johnston and then over to Sanderson and north back to Wentworth where once again we caught the light. It took a full cycle before we could turn left and head for the airport road and Stetson.
We made our way to Cawston and the jog in front of Hanger 1 before following Highlander and Surgeon out onto Stetson and over to Warren. I got back in front as we rolled by Warren and pulled us down to California. We rounded the corner and Bulldozer past me followed by Newsboy and then Gambler. By the time MacGyver rolled by I was getting itchy to go as well. I held back till Forest and Pirate picked up the pace and then we closed on the back of the fleeing four. That didn’t last too long before Gambler and Bulldozer picked up the pace and pulled away again. The group separated into three parts but we still pulled into the parking lot at Winchester only about two minutes apart.
I got out front again and started us south on Winchester heading for Grand street or “the dump road.” I kept the pace steady till we made the turn when Surgeon and MacGyver pulled by and I dropped in on MacGyver’s wheel. I stayed on that wheel till we got to Leon and made another turn South.
We had split into two groups once again and as Bulldozer and Gambler past me I looked back to see Pirate pulling two or three other riders with him. I fell back to assist and we closed a bit on the lead group till they made the light at Lindenburger and we didn’t. Pirate took the lead as we headed for Menifee and pulled away when I fell back to help Highlander with a flat tire. Digger came by as Quicksilver and I waited for Highlander. Digger continued on and soon I had Highlander and Quicksilver up to Menifee turn south towards Newport and beyond.
We found Huntress and Pirate waiting at the park before heading towards Holland. I stayed with Quicksilver and Pirate till we hit the hill and I had a chance to just barely stay ahead of Pirate to the top where we picked up Minotaur.
Is seems as if Surgeon was over the hill just past Minotaur but by the time we rolled by Garboni he turned for home. I pulled the group the rest of the way to Scott and headed back east towards Leon feeling that Huntress, Quicksilver, Highlander and Pirate might leave me to ride home on Winchester.
By the time we were ready to drop off of the hill in front of Leon Huntress pulled in front and stayed there till we got to Leon where she went straight to Winchester taking Highlander with her leaving Quicksilver, Pirate and Minotaur to finish the ride with me.
As we crested the rise on Leon I could see Digger in front of us and it took another quarter of a mile before we caught him. We then continued on to Max Gillis and the sports field where we had to refill Quicksilver’s water bottles. We then continued on to Los Alamos where I got a chance to attack the rollers and crest pretty much by myself with only Pirate chasing about 50 yards back. We then dropped down to Whitewood where we had to stop once more to get water for Minotaur. Digger continued on as we stopped and we had to make the run up Whitewood without him.
We got to the Hospital and cut over to Antelope before heading to Keller and back over to Menifee where we found Digger waiting. We then turned north on Menifee and headed back towards Domenigoni.
We made short work on Menifee and soon were out on Domenigoni and headed east back towards the saddle. I pulled us over the saddle and began the run towards Winchester. Pirate took us to Leon and Quicksilver took us to Winchester and almost to the dry wash. I finished the pull to Sanderson and got us started back to Stetson. Because of the road work on Sanderson we took Johnston to Cypress and back to Kirby before coming back to Acacia. We got to Gilmore and headed back to the parking lot where we talked for a few minutes and met up with Newsboy before heading home. I had lunch and took a very welcomed hot shower before running a few errands and downloading my Strava Information. As it is sometimes said, a good time was had by all.
