6/7/13
I had planned for an easy ride today to make sure anyone that planned on going on the beach ride Saturday would be rested enough for either the 124 mile ride or the 60. After getting up this morning I was glad I had planned an easy ride. I had eaten something yesterday that was sitting in my stomach like a brick and breakfast only made it worse. Still I wasn’t going to stay home with the promise of such a nice day so I got dressed and headed for Burger King and the group.
Things started out a bit slow with riders trickling in all the way up to 8:30. But by the time we were out onto Gilmore we had 13 riders counting the two extra Cast a Shadow rides that came in with Bulldozer.
I started out easy enough with T-3 as we made our way to Acacia and headed west only to get to Kirby just in time to watch a car run the red light leaving us high and dry to wait for another cycle before we could make the turn south on Kirby. As soon as we could we headed towards Cypress and as I looked back I could see most of the people right behind me was D V V members.
We quickly made it to Cypress and turned west towards Johnston. It wasn’t till we were cruising through the housing tract that I realized we had so many people in the group. I also just realized that Barracuda was with us. He had been out since he crashed in a TT a few weeks ago and broke his other clavicle to balance out the break he got before. He looked like he was riding comfortably anyway and pulled up near the front as we got to Sanderson. I told Bulldozer that once we got to Domenigoni he would have to lead the group because there was simply no way I felt like making a fast ride to the Saddle today. As soon as that was acknowledged we got a green light and made the turn towards Stetson.
We didn’t make it all the way to Domenigoni however. Just before I pulled the group around the corner one of the CAS riders yelled flat and we stopped while he started to fix it. I went back to see if I could help and ended up letting them use my pump. Once the tire was fixed they took off chasing the group that was already on Domenigoni while I was still remounting my pump. I had been waiting too long to jump on it and go after then so I cruised towards Warren where I found Huntress waiting for me to catch up. Huntress and Surgeon ended pulling me all the way to the Saddle for the regroup. I didn’t stay long on the Saddle and headed for Laguna Vista.
Dropping off the saddle was easy for me because is pretty much all downhill to the turn. I had no problem staying out front past Lindenburger. Huntress pulled up next to me and led us to Laguna Vista where we got the light and it allowed most of everyone else to close in on us. The traffic was a bit heavy so it took a while for everyone to get into the turn lane but one they did we headed south to work our way out to Garboni.
I felt a little better as we moved over to Bridge and thought my upset stomach we getting better. So I got out towards the front and stayed there till we passed Holland and then started up the little grade just before Garboni. This time Digger fell back to pull me around the corner and start west again. Digger pulled me up to T-3 and finally to Menifee where Dura Max had to leave us and head for home. Most of the group was pulled to the side as I got up next to them but I felt they were fast enough to catch me even if I didn’t stop.
Surgeon had to make a stop at Jack in the Box so he took off as soon as we made it to Antelope. Bloodhound went with him and Huntress rolled by me before the top og the grade followed by T-3 and Daredevil. We all pulled over to wait for Surgeon and Bloodhound and then I noticed the CAS people were missing and I got a picture from Bulldozer showing they were on their way. We pulled away towards Newport and made the turn towards Lindenburger and headed for Simpson. Before we got there we spotted Quicksticks on the side of the road fixing a flat. We stopped to watch him fix a flat and then continued on to Simpson.
We took it easy on Simpson and I only pulled for a short distance before I fell back to ride with Quicksticks. It took us a few minutes to get to Leon and into the trees. It was so good to see Quicksticks again. He was one of the first people I met when I first got into the group. But like many people life gets into the way and he has been away from up for a long time. Still as we got caught up we made our way to Winchester and headed for Chris’s. Ruby Tuesday and T-3 didn’t stop so it was just Barracuda, Bloodhound, Daredevil, Huntress, Digger, Surgeon, Quicksticks and me.
Huntress, Surgeon, Bloodhound, and Daredevil took off first leaving Digger, Barracuda, Quicksticks and me to head for Stowe a few minutes later to begin our ride home.
I was feeling a bit better as we headed for California and even managed to take a turn at the front that took us all the way to the corner. We turned north and Digger pulled us to Stetson and around that corner. We cruised our way down to Warren where Quicksticks left us and headed for home and I took us to the Airport Road where digger left.
Barracuda stayed with me as we rolled over the railroad tracks and made our way to Sanderson before heading north to Johnston and east again. It was pretty easy going as we crossed Kirby and then Lyon, Elk and Palm where I broke for home as Barracuda continued on towards the east side of town. I coasted up to my door and was happy to get inside with 35 miles on the computer. I might not have been at 100 percent today but it was a 100 percent kind of day. One that made me glad I had to friends I have to ride with.
