9/05/2012 By: C. Kent, aka (Superman) On most days like Wednesday we wouldn’t even be riding. Some places it was raining and some places it was not raining. I got a call from Digger saying it was raining at his house and I walked outside to see a dry sidewalk. I told Digger I was going to ride over to Burger King just to see who showed up and when I got there Dura Max and Centaur were waiting with Coyote. There were a few raindrops but nothing steady so we sat there and waited to see who else might join us. Highlander was there but he was looking pensive about riding even after D’Artagnon and Gambler call to say they were on their way. A few minutes later Gambler called back to say it was raining on the east end and they were staying home. That cinched it for Highlander and he decided to pass and with him Digger decided t go back home as well. Dura Max took off to pick up T-3 while Centaur, Coyote and I were left to ride alone.
We had a pretty simple ride planned and we set about doing it in almost workman like determination. We made it south on Kirby and west on Cypress and out onto Sanderson. We chatted easily on our way south past Stetson and towards Mustang. School is back in so we have to be careful with traffic turning right from the second lane even during a red. We didn’t have any issues today and so we moved quickly down to Domenigoni and headed east towards Searl. Our first little challenge would be the Seven Dollar Hill and both Coyote and Centaur pulled away from me easily on the climb even if I felt I was climbing comfortably. I rounded the last big right hand turn just about the time Centaur started back down.
I was thinking to myself that so far we had been pretty lucky. All the way down Sanderson and then on Domenigoni we could feel rain drops but nothing to get the tires wet or even leave drops on my glasses. It was a bit like riding on a summer day and having a kid on the side of the road trying to hit you with a squirt gun. But it did cool off the weather and made the climb easier, at least in my opinion, just as I was thinking these thoughts Coyote past me coming back down the hill.
I had another twenty or thirty yards to go before I got to the top and was able to turn around and chase the two speedsters back down to Searl. At the last turn I saw Dura Max and T-3 heading up the hill so I realized they were on the same ride as we were. When I got back to where Centaur and Coyote were waiting we left to get back on Domenigoni and headed for State Street. Coyote took us south the McSweeney and we cruised through the housing development and back out onto State. The three of us worked together and made a respectable run on the State Street Mile. We worked our way east on Chambers and out onto Stetson to Fairview. Coyote and Centaur took us to Cranston Station and made a quick turnaround to head back towards Fairview again. We past Dura Max and T-3 heading up to Cranston while we made it to Fairview and out to Ramona. Our goal was to make it to Hewett and then down to Yale so we could stop at Hamby’s.
While we had coffee D’Artagnon joined us and Dura Max rode up with T-3. After spending about 30 minutes talking we all headed back to Devonshire and west towards home.
We were a lot closer to Santa Fe coming from Yale so we were back there pretty quickly and dropped down to Latham. We were catching all the lights green and were past State Street in a minute or two more. Dura Max and T-3 stayed with us till we got to Lyon and I rode to the parking lot with Coyote and Centaur. Once they were dropped off I headed back for my house and a hot shower. It was a better ride than I had expected And in fact it never really rained on us.
