It was Friday again and another great week of riding was at hand. I got up before any alarm and had breakfast before starting my stretching exercises and started to watch a bit of the Summer Olympics. However I have watched about as much Water Polo as I can stand and so I turned on news. Once I was done I got dressed and headed out of the door to see who was up for an easy flat ride of about 38 miles.
Once we started to assemble we quickly built to six or seven riders. Dura Max, Surgeon, Highlander, Nike, Huntress, Puma and I hit the road just after 8am. It only took is a few minutes to make it to Kirby and head south.
Soon we had turned onto Cypress and were headed for Johnston and Sanderson. we turned right or north on Sanderson and caught the light on Whitworth. Once it turned green we headed for the airport. I led us out onto Stetson and west towards Warren but before we got there Huntress started to have problems with her tire and we made a quick stop. We got started again but as soon as we started down California Huntress flatted and we stopped again while she fixed it. The new tube seemed to work pretty well so we headed for Stowe.
Surgeon had gone ahead and was waiting at Winchester while we made the turn on Stowe. I took the lead and pulled the group all the way to the parking lot at Winchester where we planned on regrouping. Once we all were back together I started us down Winchester at an easy pace past the dump road. Soon we were past Simpson and on our way to Domenigoni.
Once on Domenigoni it was time for the long pull to State Street. Surgeon pulled till we were in sight of the dry wash and I took over and pulled past warren road and almost to the next street till I fell back a rode with Dura Max till we got to Searl and turned in to take a nature break. As soon as we were ready to go Huntress made it clear she was going to challenge the State Street sprint.
When we pulled onto State we didn’t get 100 yards before Huntress attacked. I grabbed her wheel and planned on following her till we were in sight of the rise. But as she seemed to lose a bit of steam I pulled around and dropped the hammer. Much to my surprise he didn’t fall of the back and by the time I hit the rise she sprinted around and dropped me on her way to Chambers. We all didn’t catch up to her and Surgeon till we got to Thornton to make our way to Santa Fe.
Once back out onto Stetson we decided to go straight past Columbia and head for Fairview. Highlander never has liked Crest anyway so we didn’t make the turn and headed for the High School and then over the little climb. Our ears were accosted by some little lady in a blue mini SUV beeping her horn all the way up the hill even while we were on the right side of the fog line. We stretched out as we past Lake and regrouped once more at Fairview. After we started again I got ready for an attack on the Fairview sprint from Huntress and Surgeon. I had to spin into the red line all the way to Mayberry to pull away from them and only made it to Florida a few feet in front of them. Our next stop was the ranger station.
As we pulled out of the station parking lot I knew there was one more sprint before we would be stopping for coffee and conversation. I fell back to fourth place before I got Huntress’s attention. As soon as she got on my wheel I attacked and pulled away and over the rise into the trees. We had caught Puma Flat footed literally because he came unclipped when he tried to jump on it. We reformed a pace line and rode all the way to Carl’s for a quick stop. We took off on Lincoln and headed for home dropping Huntress off at her street and then Dura Max and Surgeon left us at Park.
The remaining four riders rode around park before cutting over to Devonshire and heading west. It was almost too easy rolling along as we closed in on Santa Fe and turned down onto Latham and headed back to Burger King to load the bikes back into the vehicles. I talked with the group for a few minutes before riding home myself. My total miles turned into about 40 so I felt like it was a pretty good day.
